A friend of mine works for Thames Water and recently showed me a new product they are endorsing; the problem that it addresses is water efficiency in the domestic setting. The water pebble is a small semi spherical device that slowly reduces the amount of water we use in the shower or sink. The pebble is placed near the drain in the shower for example, and reads the length of time that one spends running the water; at this point it flashes a green light to show its reading. Next time you have a shower it flashes green then yellow and finally red when you should leave the shower. Every day from here on it reduces your time by 3% until you have reduced 25% of your water consumption.
Increasing the energy and water efficiency in the home is a necessary part of a bright future but a tough issue to apply to our spoiled western lifestyle. The water pebble serves as an effective tool to improve one’s water efficiency as well as one’s time management. The design is simple, requires very little attention to function and has an aesthetic that merges synthetic and organic.
