Andrea Kim: Assignment 5- 3 Issues and 3 Possible Contacts

A) 3 Issues that I would like to examine:

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

- Prosthetics and its uses in different situations

- Technology used in the military

- Biomimicry (i.e. an adhesive made by worms inspires a new treatment for broken bones…how fascinating!)

- Biomedicine

COFFEE PRODUCTION

- Tradition/Ritual

- Addictiveness

- Trend/Scene of coffee culture

- Economic Stability

- Quality

BEHAVIOR

- How people behave on public transportation

- Psychology behind the use of products

- Products that come out to feed our zombie/robot like actions

B) I am interested in addressing…

- …the complexity of medical technology for the less fortunate through a product or service.

- ….how we can bring the type of products used in the militia and bring it to the masses through a simpler version.

- …biomimicry, how we can take a natural creation and bring it into our production world.

- …coffee production and how it affects economies through the use of a system or a service.

- …how coffee is now not just a tradition, but it is a way of life, perhaps through the use of a product?

- …the confidence (or another type of emotion) a product can bring through the use of research and case studies, which could lead to a product or an educational tool.

C)

D) 3 Experts:

- Dean Kamen – inventor of the segway PT and Modular robotic arm. Addresses denser and serious issues like paralysis, prosthetics, energy, water purification, etc.

- T.R. Reid (National Geographic journalist) speaks heavily on caffeine and stimulants of energy and its murder to sleep as well as it being the popular drug of choice for travelers.

- John Roach – (NG Journalist) “The coffee industry employs an estimated 25 million people worldwide and coffee is the world's second most valuable commodity behind petroleum.”

- Mark Ward – Discusses the use of the ipod for more than its music and pretty face. But how women use it for protection, change of experience, and behavioral rejection or entrance.

E) Throughout any discussion, I’d like to learn first hand knowledge from the journalists and professionals. I’d like to get more sources from them as well as potentially work with case scenarios. My main goal is to really learn first hand and not have any “assumptions” throughout my thesis.

RANDOM:

An interesting thing I came across that climate change can affect. Never did I expect anything like this...kind of gross...
