CHELSEA BRIGANTI_WALK THROUGH REVIEW & NEXT STEPS

Re-Framing Thesis Goals:

1. Humanizing Science
2. Addressing value and meaning in Science "We cannot change things, we can only change what they mean." -Tony Fry
3. Exploring design thinking vs. scientific thinking [intertwined!]
4. Analysis of field of interest [being able to talk the talk]
5. Being able to explain to scientists what they are doing and how/when/where design may intersect.
6. Expressing information in 3D.

Hi Chelsea,
It looks like your thinking is taking an interesting turn. I think you now need to push yourself to get more precise about your intentions: are you interested in working on products that are used in the lab, or is it the public awareness of the important role of stem cell science in future breakthroughs that you hope to focus on? All scientists are strongly supportive of stem cell research, except for a few people that I would call either "crazy" or "misguided" or "both". So, there would be no purpose for a product that was to be used in the lab that communicated advocacy messages. I am a little worried that you are drifting a bit here; you have done good research, and developed a strong understanding of the science underlying this particular field. Now, you have to do the hard part, which is to decide what it all means, and what, as a designer, you can do to illuminate the issues in ways that you believe will positively influence the culture and improve our lives. Nice work so far, but time to start making some decision and making things, I would say.

Hi Steven,

You are absolutely right--now the hard part: how will this relate to design and what I am I trying to address?
I am in the process of working this out, which includes taking inventory of notes/research and talking to as many people as possible. Would like to sit down and talk to you more about it tomorrow. Thanks,

Chelsea
