Vanessa Leung's 3 Topics

The first topic I want to focus on is how poor quality of soil and global warming impacts on the quality of wine. Some solutions that I considered to explore are devices or gadgets that would help keep track of the quality of soil. Incorporating technology into daily products that helps the producers notice when something is wrong could also be an interesting route. I also wanted to explore a metaphorical approach where I would create a product that would educate the buyers about what the problems vineyard conditions are currently facing and how we can help. I also want to explore creating a system that can prevent the soil diseases from spreading from one place to another. Some people that I have considered talking to would be companies, or people who grow or produce food, so I can learn how the process works and why they produce in a certain way. Soil experts can teach me about behaviors of soil and how to prevent diseases from spreading. Vineyards would be a good resource as well because it allows us to see what problems they are dealing with and how they deal with these problems. Lastly I would also talk to weather scientist to see what patters will be seeing in the future.

The layout of vineyards is very important in a sense where an efficient vineyard can save a lot of money and protect the environment. Some solutions I came up with could be as simple as a computer program or an actual interactive model that acts like a sketching pad. It allows the user to plan their vineyard before constructing the real life vineyard without proper planning. This topic could also be tied in with focusing on sustainability. There could also be interesting information on the blocks that teach the producers how a sustainable vineyard is beneficial. Some people to contact would be architects, engineers, and vineyard owners or managers. They could give me insight on how to approach organizing layouts of vineyards. Also factory planners or city planners, to see how they plan infrastructures and how they started or what they considered.

Packaging and the distribution of wine is large problem because of its carbon foot print. There is one other factor to think about which is tradition verses the new inventions. So I explored certain thing such as form studies and the use of different materials. However, changing too much of the tradition with the packaging of wine can be dangerous. Furthermore a big problem with distribution is the excess amount of materials used for packaging. People I could talk to would be distributer, where they can help or guide me what their daily routine would be and why they chose this routine for their company. Material specialists would be helpful where they can educate or explore different types of materials that would more suitable for this situation. Sustainable experts would also be very helpful to see how we could reduce the carbon foot print and also the bottlers, to compare to the new products verse tradition.

Here are a couple of places you might consider talking to
University of Ca at Davis has a big viniculture department that does lots of breakthrough stuff.

try the state departments of agriculture and more recently eco tourism since the vineyards are becoming tourist destinations and have other ideas about how to lay out vineyards to encourage visitors

you might also look into what Australia is doing with wine packaging. VIP Packaging is experimenting with putting wine in PET (like coco cola) plastic bottles.

you might also check out what New Zealand is doing, I think Austrlia got the idea from them. what else they have cooked up?

Good luck and let me know about the tasting sessions
