2. LEED – see USGBC to Learn about LEED criteria and achievements

check out Bill McKibbens stuff about living off the grid or lightly on the planet

the grid is a big issue especially since the city has gone dark twice recently.
you might check out DOE funding for smart grid applications and lear about the problems with the grid if you want to know why so much money is being directed to grids

-Power Consumption with consumer goods.
check out
NYSERDA and
DOE, aka dept of energy

Jake, like Chelsea, I was interested in your drawing (although I would not characterize it as gorgeous). It is the kind of stream-of-consciousness doodle that can be very helpful in the ideation stage of the thesis. In studying the drawing, I was able to pick out a number of themes that I believe could be the kernel of an idea that deserving of further development in your quest to produce an exciting and timely research proposal and product design. However, I didn't really see those ideas developed in the narrative that accompanied the drawing. For example, you show some kind of apparatus for recycling human waste as fuel and animal feed(!). While contemplating the mechanics of this is somewhat disgusting, there are actually real projects that are currently imagining how waste products such as ammonia (easily recovered from urine) can be used as a fuel source. I read in this month's The Futurist (http://www.wfs.org/futurist.htm) that can be used in ways that do not contribute to production of atmospheric carbon. These are serious topics that require intensive research and a sophisticated approach. So, my advice to you is: get beyond the brainstorming phase and settle upon a single idea that is viable and that interests you. Let me know if I can be of help as you work through this. I find the best strategy is to keep sketching, and keep talking through the issues you are addressing.
