Interested? [Leigh Ann]

The above diagram shows my interests in our food system and food culture, the second one after some further discussion during class. From today's exercise, I concluded that my over-all hypothesis is that the creation of a sustainable food system would improve the health of our land, people, and community. I realize that this statement is extremely broad and over-arching, but I found it helpful to think about the end goal in tackling the smaller problems within this huge system of growing and eating. One of the main assumptions will need to study and test more is that if access to sustainable food is more convenient or affordable, that people will want to participate in this system. For further research, I plan to collect more factual information on the validity of a local and organic food system, interview farmers from both organic/non-organic and family/industrial farms, survey consumers about their eating practices and thoughts, and observe community food and cooking events.

Hi Leigh Ann,
I am still unclear about your position vis a vis sustainable food. Are you interested in this topic mostly as way to improve access to healthy food in the US? Or are you mostly concerned about making sure that food is available at a price that people can afford? What is your opinion about genetically modified crops? If GM seeds could lead to much higher crop yields, with less use of chemical pesticides, would you be in favor that that? Do you think that the government should regulate "frankenfoods"? Who will use the product that you develop? Farmers? Consumers? It's time to get much more focused and come up with some solid plans for products.

Hi,

There are two great people at NY State Department of Agriculture based in Brooklyn who I recommend you stop by and talk to.
first check out their programs http://www.agmkt.state.ny.us/AP/agservices/marketing.html

Christina Grace is in the Brooklyn office working on farm to school

roam around the ny agriculture website and see where you are at that point

(also check out the farmers association which coordinates farmers participation in farmers markets

also Community Markets which runs NYC and westchester farmers markets)
