CHELSEA_BRIGANTI: STAKEHOLDERS+PLAN+TOOLS

STAKEHOLDERS:

Scientists: [in varied fields] are working night and day to develop new and innovative ways to utilize stem cell research in order to cure disease. A scientist's notoriety is dependent upon the success of his experiments. Oftentimes, this can lead to secrecy and competition.

Politicians: Obama supports Stem Cell research, while Bush was against it, hot button issues often serve as platforms for political parties to differentiate themselves.

Religious Right/ Right to Life Groups: are against stem cell research when embryos are used and may hold the beliefs that only god should control our mortality/existence, not science.[in terms of organ-growing etc.]

People awaiting Organ transplantation: these people are very interested in the development of this field because there are not enough organs available and they are often times rejected by the body after being transplanted.

People who have cancer/disease/ailments: the potential for stem cell science to cure disease by cloning one's own cells is very promising and will be used to cure disease in the future.

Pharmaceutical companies: PROFIT. Stem cell poses an enormous opportunity to create drugs that function in tandem with a future stem cell transplantation. [synthetic insulin, antibiotics]

BioTech: PROFIT: this field consists of all the medical equipment and specialized tools necessary to enable scientific/biologic applications.

Cord Blood Banks: these 'living banks' offer consumers the opportunity to store their blood or their children's umbilical cord blood for future use, in case of injury etc.

Nanotechnology: a field where extremely precise instruments are developed for scientific research.

Infertility Clinics: Most embryos for research are donated by couples after InVitro is performed.

Philanthropists: After Bush shut down stem cell lines, the field was kept afloat with help of private donors and to this day a majority of funds are philanthropically donated.

National Institute for Health: is a main source of funding for scientists. The process for this funding is very political and embroiled in religious debate.

Food and Drug Administration: The FDA has the power to pass certain laws which prohibit the use of stem cells for specific purposes. They control application and the NIH controls funding. The FDA also controls which pharmaceuticals go to market, in this case for stem cell therapies.

Universities, Colleges, Hospitals: these institutions have a stake in the field in terms of the flow of quality scientists, students, professors and doctors that can work to boost their academic and scientific records.
