RESEARCH PROGRESS:

Interview with Libby Kowalski of Kova Textiles: Libby is an expert on experimental/innovative textiles. Through talking to her I gained an understanding of the challenges of innovation in the textile industry as many mills are unwilling to change their practices. She has offered to help me throughout my project and will be a great resource when it comes time for sourcing and spec-ing my project.

Comparison of Hi-Tech and Household Textiles: Through this comparison I have identified opportunites for my designs - areas in which the properties of the high tech textiles may be combined with the necessary functions of the househould textiles.

Observation: I went out to observe indoor activities that are adapted for outside use in order to see extreme conditions that may require extreme materials. This research has helped me to think about consumer objects in general, as well as people's ways of adapting their objects that do not work so well.

IN-CLASS UPDATE

Today I spoke with Jennifer.

For next week I will create full scale mock-ups of my ideas using the materials I have been speaking about in class. I will identify the stakeholders in my project and continue to frame my project so that I am accurately communicating my goals. I will continue to source materials to experiment with in preparation for the review. I will begin to contact manufacturers and pitch my concepts in order to understand their resistance (if any) to the use of these materials.
