Mission Statement
My mission is to provide healthy and safe cosmetic products (or a service) for consumer and environment.
Hypotheses
1. There is a need for cosmetic industry to be environment friendly. Most of cosmetic & beauty products are made to be used for once and later be thrown away. By raising awareness and creating a sustainable product or a service, will help to reduce the package waste impact on environment.
2. People these days use cosmetic & beauty products everyday. Many of these products are using toxic ingredients and there are no regulations. The ingredients must be regulated to make healthier and safer for health.
Research methods
1. Cosmetic industry: understanding the industry, researching Top brands (what they market, sell, offer, etc.) <<Internet articles, company websites
2. Materials/ingredients: National Geographic "Green Guide" for cosmetics, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Animal testing (CCIC's Leaping Bunny Program), Korres (natural formulations), Kiehls
3. Package: Environmental Protection Agency for packaging waste, Curtis Packaging Corp. (sustainable packaging), National Geographic "Green Guide", TerraSkin (paper made from stone), German's Green Dot Program
4. Manufacturer: interview with Elcos (cosmetics and beauty products total manufacturer)
Analysis
Cosmetic and Beauty Industry:
1. Most unregulated
2. Uses toxic ingredients
3. Meaningless labels
4. Over packaged
5. Product containers are not recyclable, reusable, or reducible
People should be aware of the ingredients, which are harmful for human health used in cosmetic & beauty products. Manufacturers and distributors should be more conscious of the ingredients and materials that they use for producing the products are not only harmful for health but also bad for the environment. They need to take responsibility for their act.
External Relationships
1. Kiehls
2. Curtis Packaging Corp.
3. TerraSkin
4. Green Dot Program / Duales System
5. Elcos (interview with general manager)
Design opportunity
1. Raising awareness using graphic
2. Design a package using recyclable, reusable, or reducible materials
3. Package design using less material
Design Criteria
1. Function
2. Cost criteria
3. More material criteria
Conceptual Development
1. Designing a soap with printed facts of cosmetic industries using natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging
2. Designing a cosmetic brand that is healthy and safe for consumer and environment
Feedback
- need to research what motivates people when choosing cosmetic products
- research on how people feel about cosmetic; what they look for; what they think about cosmetics
- talk to people (consumer / companies)
- research Bio Plastics / Biodegradable
- second life for packaging / two products in one (cosmetic+seeds)
- creating a brand: add on to existing or alternative
- face sticker of a person who made
Next Steps
I got the names that I should talk to (Loreal from Edwin / Yana Zueezk from Marry). I need to contact them to understand the industry better and what their point of view is.
I also need to start making something to test my theories.
Feedback from Len
-need more visuals and less words
-the identified toxic ingredients need to be analyzed and also need to make it easy for people to understand (many using graphics)
-start sketches and make 3d models

YooRi,
I think that it's interesting that cosmetics don't have to be labeled with ingredients in the same way that food does. You are right that there are dangers that they should alert the consumer to, if they are placing potentially harmful substances on people's skin, and in their eyes and on other mucous membranes. Are you planning on producing some kind of packaging concept that includes warnings? I would guess that is would have to be very subtle to avoid scaring people. What if cosmetics had a big warning like cigarettes? How much are people willing to risk to look beautiful? These are the kinds of questions you may want to be asking people in a survey or questionnaire. It sounds to me that your project focuses on perceptions, so you have to be very aware of what people already think, so that you can convince them and affect their purchasing behavior (I assume that your ultimate goal is to sell more make up).
Let me know what you think.
