Hi Sunki,
I am very interested in your project ideas. From the bar chart that you showed, it looks like bicycle use in New York City has been growing steadily since 9-11. It would be great to do something with bicycle sharing in NYC, but I am not sure that it is possible, considering the problems that they found in places like Paris and Amsterdam. The key would be to design a system that makes it harder for people to steal or break the bikes. I think you should design a new kind of bicycle lock; if someone tries to steal the bike, it will explode or somehow damage the bike. So, there would be no reason for a thief to steal the bike if it would never work or be sellable after it was stolen. I think that this might lead to a big reduction in replacement costs. You only need to make a small improvement to make the system work, you will never reduce the amount of crime to 0, but even small reductions are very important and make quality of life much better for everyone (except for criminals!)
