This blog provides a forum for students, instructors and others to share information and ideas about the Spring Thesis Program at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City.
Hi HS, Sorry it has taken me a long time to respond to your post. I share your interest in inventing new products that encourage people to plant trees. You are correct that trees are very important and useful in many ways, and by planting many more trees, we will be improving the environment.
In your writing, you mentioned that it is important to create links between people and the trees they plant. Maintainging a connection to a living tree would really make it fun for people; they could track the tree that they planted as a seed until it became huge. This might take ten years or more, but it would be fun for people, especially kids, to follow "their" tree's growth. I am wondering if you could create a product something like a tomogotchi but for a real tree. Kids could keep the "tree monitor" with them. It could tell them things about their tree, how tall it is, how much Oxygen it is creating right now, etc. This might encourage people to develop personal relationships with individual trees. If it became popular, many millions of trees would be planted, and your product would be a success! steven
