This week, I started to observe what happens during a wine tasting and how people interact with one another or with the sommeliers. Some disturbing factors I found were how busy and fast pace the wine tasting was. The interaction between the sommeliers and consumers were very general or nonexistent. However, on an interesting note, most people went with friends so there was a social aspect during this event. Out of the 30 people whom where there, I only saw one person take notes on the wine. Therefore, I am quite confused about how to approach this group of people, because it seemed as if many people were just there to drink. However, I cannot draw a full conclusion because it was only one wine tasting.
After talking to sommeliers (Mary whom also talked to a sommelier), we both realized that some people in the wine industry (not vineyards) did not know about how global warming is affecting the quality/production of wine. Therefore, there is potential for a product to connect the disconnection between the consumption verse consumption. I can still work with sommeliers because I can gather the culture of wine drinking in which they are experts in. However, after understanding that not all sommeliers know about the current changes in vineyards, it is key that I have to talk to vineyards or winemakers for the details about the wine industry.
Last week I sent out a survey and “mapped it out” my results, but I didn’t not analyze it properly. Therefore this week I also re-organized the old and new information in a way where I actually could see the results and connections. I also asked a wider variety of people and realized that a lot of people put themselves under people who have moderate knowledge about wine. However, after analyzing the information, “moderate knowledge” can fall under two categories. People who understand the traditional culture of drinking wine, and the other group are the people who know about the production side.

Hi Vanessa,
Can you tell me more about the interactive table shown in your pictures? How does it work, and what kind of information does it show? Is it a projector mounted above a table, or is the image coming from below? also, how does this research contribute to your product ideation? I am not really sure still whether your investigation is bearing fruit. You are clearly learning a lot about wine, but I less convinced that your original effort to develop a product that responded to the issue of climate change in wine-making is really addressed. I must say that I don't really look at that as a bad thing. It's very important to remain very open to where your research is taking you, even if that is away from your original premise. I am kind of wondering if maybe you should do something that teaches people about wine in general, and also educates them about the changes being brought about by global warming. That's why I am asking about the interactive table, because that seems like an effective tool for communicating about complex subject matter, including the interaction of climate and other factors on flavor, body, color, etc.
