People I talked to this week:
1. Susan Shapiro and Pam Zweifel (suburbanites!)
2. Glen at the Middlebury Food Co-op
3. Tim at Food and Water Watch
4. Megan at Brooklyn Skillshare
Feedback from class:
1. convey the attitude of project through board design - experiment with my "voice" during research phases
2. participation is part of the design criteria
3. need more tools to gather information (use a tool i make to prove research read about)
4. make connections from experiments
5. better describe life in suburbia (demographics, map of area and food options, life style)
6. better understand the user - do more ethnographic research "get into the skin of these people"
7. evaluate more design precedence
8. look to other countries for example of "good" food systems
Plan for next week:
1. Charette: A balance between local foods and imported foods must be met in order to realistically achieve a sustainable food system. But how will we define this balance? I want to know what people believe is the right balance. I will set up grocery items like a store, labeling the ramifications of purchasing each item. “Customers” will have to decide what items are “worth” shipping and those that should only be bought from local sources.
2. Observation and identifying opportunity "moments"
3. Visualize suburban environment and situation more clearly
4. Start compiling information for proposal book
5. Contact more people for research (mainly farmers)

Hey Leigh Ann,
nice boards and cool sketch models. Looks like it's coming together!
I thought about your project today on the subway here in Stockholm when I saw an advertisement for "Matrebellerna" (food rebels).
The "Food Rebels" are a group of smaller, local supermarkets that have joined forces in order to survive against the growing number of MegaMarkets that seem to take over the market.
http://matrebellerna.se is their website. The text on it says basically that they are about 60 small supermarket chains that focus on local and sustainable food options.
What I think is quite interesting is the graphic language, clearly hinting at old school socialistic and communistic propaganda campaigns. As far as I can tell, it's going pretty well for them and their rather aggressive campaign.
I like how they pump up the volume and I believe that the graphic language is going to essential in a successful project.
Ben
whoa.... food rebels sounds awesome! i wish i could read their site!
