Eliana Alborta: Design for the Living World
Paulina Reyes was born and raised I Mexico City and studied graphics design and industrial design. Her background and heritage has deeply influenced her work as a designer. Paulina refers to the social classes in third world countries and the discrimination indigenous people have to withstand. Paulina visits Chiquitano Dry Forests in Bolivia, where she works hands on with the artisans. The use of Bolivia’s natural resources gives the final product and richness and defined. The handcrafted bags are made of FSC certified rosewood (morado), organic cotton, and jipijapa a palm leaf fiber. By creating connections with the material and Bolivian artisans Paulina is opening the door to new possibilities.
Christien Meindertsma is textiles designer and graduates from the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Christien works with sheep wool from the Lava Ranch in Idaho. Her inspirations derive from the location and allow of its inhabitants. The modular rug is linked together to represent the flock and move around just as the flock would. The relation created with the consumer and the product is very personal due to the life each unit holds. I was first drawn to this piece for its beautiful aesthetic quality. The meaning she put into the “One Sheep Rug,” is poetic and inspiring.
